Resumes….How important are they to your job search?

Very important.

If you apply for a job in person or online, it’s the first thing you’re asked for.

You must have one.  I don’t care if people tell you they’re outdated and unnecessary.  They are dead wrong.  And chances are they haven’t done one themselves in sometime.

When I meet with clients, I typically talk to them about two basic types of resumes, Chronological and Functional.

A Chronological Resume focuses on your work experience in reverse date order (most recent experience first).

A Functional Resumes takes your work experience content and groups into categories (such as Administration, Training or Project Management).

However did you know there's actually a third type of resume? It’s your digital footprint!!

If a potential employer Googled your name, what would they find? What's in cyberspace is part of your story, too.

Try it out! Google your full name - including middle initial and maiden name if applicable. What will YOU discover?

After you have your results:

1) Delete any negative or controversial comments you’ve posted on others social media pages. This includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and blogs.

2) Expand your positive presence and expertise by participating in relevant online forums. Create a blog related to your expertise. If video is important to your expertise create a YouTube channel and highlight your relevant skills and talents.

3) Create or enhance your LinkedIn profile to fill in any gaps on your resume. Take full advantage of the profile area. Join LinkedIn groups related to your expertise.

The next step is to take action and do the work. Doors to opportunity will remain closed if your resume key isn't a fit. If you're not sure how you appear on paper (and online) let's review your resume and LinkedIn profile.
